Why law school, why Penn Law?
There is no pre-law educational requirement or even a specific recommended course of study for admission to Penn Law. Strength of character, breadth of knowledge, and intellectual maturity constitute the base upon which our legal education builds. As such, Penn Law seeks to enroll individuals who have demonstrated outstanding academic success, who are intellectually curious, and who possess superior writing, oral communication, and analytical skills. Importantly, we also seek individuals who will positively contribute to the Penn Law community, and ultimately, to the legal profession, based on their diverse backgrounds, their personal and professional experiences, and any challenges or obstacles that they may have overcome.

Penn Law received more than 6,400 applicants for the Class of 2022.
Within the class, 40 percent identify as people of color, and 49 percent are women. 61 majors are represented in the class, with 15 percent coming from STEM backgrounds, including a significant number of biologists. The class represents 120 different undergraduate institutions, bringing an additional element of diversity to the varied backgrounds the students bring to Penn Law. 72 percent come to Penn Law having already gained work experience, and 12 percent hold advanced degrees. The average age of the class is 25.
The Class of 2022 has shown itself to be made up of global citizens committed to improving their local communities through their work, scholarship, and service.
They include teachers and scholars, including Fulbright Scholars, alumni of Americorps and Teach for America, and several Rhodes and Truman Scholars. They have served in the Peace Corps, and in the United States Army and Navy. They have founded non-profits and led advocacy programs.
They also possess a wide range of professional experience, representing a diverse assortment of careers. They include a wilderness first responder, several EMTs, a stylist, journalists, engineers, entrepreneurs, investment analysts, realtors, custodians, professional soccer, basketball, and golf players, and the manager of a horse farm.
And just as they’ve shown themselves to be talented professionals, they’ve also shown themselves to be outstanding leaders and team players. The class includes captains of college sports teams, undergraduate student body presidents, an Olympic trial finalist in swimming, and many admissions volunteers and peer advisors.
But beyond their accomplishments — in the classroom and in their communities — they also have had inspirational, often unpredictable, lives. They include improv comedy troupe members, sports team coaches, and the drum major for a university band. Several are first generation Americans, and many are first generation college and professional school students.
